What can I do for the environment?

There is a great deal that you can do for the environment as a student:

Waste management

  • Copy and print on both sides of the paper.
  • Encourage your course leaders, lecturers and fellow students to save on paper.
  • Also put newspaper and sheets of paper in the container for recycling paper.
  • Avoid disposable materials.
  • Sort waste.

Energy management

  • Put out lights when you leave rooms.
  • Put of the monitor when the computer is not being used.
  • Put off the computer in the evenings and at weekends – NB: check with your computer support section about any conflicts of objectives between the environment/availability
  • Use energy-saving/standby modes for electronic equipment
  • Put off photocopiers and printers at night
  • Set energy requirements when purchasing electronic equipment
  • Keep an eye on fume cupboards – do not open fully when they are not being used (unless there are special reasons)
  • Ensure that other special equipment does not use up more energy than necessary – shut down where possible

Food products

  • Ask for KRAV labelled food in our restaurants. HÖRS can offer KRAV labelled snacks and lunches if ordered.
  • Avoid cod, king prawns, conventionally grown bananas and product containing palm oil (the latter is hard to avoid, but it is possible ... Avoiding products from Carlshhamn dairy may be a step in the right direction).

Journeys

  • You can limit the effect of your journeys on the external environment. Take public transport instead of taking the car. Cycle or walk instead of taking a bus to the University.
  • Travel with others
  • Reduce your number of journeys through alternative forms of meeting that utilise modern technology (video conferences, webcams at the workplace etc.).

Cooperation

  • Create channels that make research that is of relevance for the environment and sustainability well-known – to the municipality, the media, residents etc.
  • Participate in public debate about these issues
