Fika with waffles for international students
A sunny Friday afternoon a group of international master’s and exchange students gathered to enjoy Swedish waffles at Färgaregården in Norrköping. The event was organised by the International Office as a part of the welcome activites for newly arrived students.
“We want to do something special for the new international students in Norrköping, who sometimes tend to be forgotten. In Linköping there are much more activities for international students. This is a way to introduce them to the Swedish fika-culture”, says Aiste Mickeviciute who works at the International Office.
The waffle afternoon is not a new concept. The International Office has arranged a similar event earlier, but only for international master’s students.
“This time we have invited both exchange students and master’s students who are new here in Norrköping so that more international students can meet”, says Aiste and adds : “It is a great turn-out today. There were only two pre-registered students who didn't show up”.
The afternoon was much appreciated by the students who enjoyed the beautiful settings by Motala Ström, even though they had to fight hungry wasps for the waffles.
Pirmin Buchenberg is an exchange student from Germany. He found out about the event on a information sheet about welcome activities.
“This kind of events is a great way to meet other Erasmus-students”, he says and adds : “the waffles here are so good”.
Saidhbh Mallon is an exchange student from Ireland and only arrived in Sweden a couple of days ago. So far she is enjoying her stay, especially the nice weather and environment.
She says that hopefully she will participate in more IO orgranised events here in Norrköping.
“It's amazing to meet new people from different countries and different courses”.
The waffle afternoon is one of many upcoming events for students in Norrköping.
“We’re going to have a city tour and a quiz in a couple of weeks, and of course there will be more fika”, says Aiste.
