Student questionnaire puts LiU under the microscope

The 2017 student questionnaire is well under way. Between now and 20 April, students at LiU have the opportunity to make known their views about the study environment, their courses, equal opportunities, and student democracy.

And the student questionnaire is highly important, as those responsible for student support and welfare at all three student unions at LiU can confirm: Linnéa Lundström from StuFF, Axel Lund from Consensus and Ina Jansson from LinTek.

“The results of the student questionnaire are used by both the university and the student unions as a basis for their work,” says Linnéa. “We often check the percentage of students with one opinion or another when we discuss various issues at meetings with LiU. This is clearly a survey that is referred to, and continually used as a basis for discussions.” 

“I don’t think such extensive university-wide investigations, in which all three student unions work together, are common. This gives added weight to the results,” says Ina.

And coordinating the different interests doesn’t seem to have been a problem.

“It’s not a problem that we are three student unions with different questions that are important to us,” says Axel. “When the survey is over, we get results classified right down to the level of an educational programme, and this means we can see which issues are important for those taking any particular programme.”

What is the most important question for you and your student union?

Axel, Consensus: 
“The hidden costs associated with VFU (education in the workplace). If you are placed in another town, you indirectly pay while getting your degree. We are working on it, but it still needs considerable improvement.”

Ina, LinTek:
“The workplace environment. There is a shortage of study places, and a shortage of places to sit down and eat lunch. These are concrete points, and if you must hurry to heat your lunch and then can’t find somewhere to sit and eat it, this may eventually lead to a stress reaction.

Linnéa, StuFF:
“The lack of contact hours has always been a hot topic for us. Students feel that they don’t meet the teachers sufficiently often, and it’s important to do so, in order to be inspired and feel motivated, among other reasons.”

All three:
“Feedback about work, such as hand-in assignments, written exercises, and seminars. It is important that a teacher explain how you performed and why, and it should be related to the grade given. Another point is that it can take too long before getting the result: sometimes several weeks pass without you knowing how you performed.” 

Have you any advice for students who are going to respond?

“If the section or course has a particular question that you feel strongly about, consult with other students and get others to enter this in the free-text answers. Last time round, the Graphic Design and Communication section (GDK) used Facebook to encourage students to express a wish for a student kitchen in Täppan. And it led to one being established there.”

The most significant changes that have been achieved by previous student questionnaires, according to Linnéa, Ina and Axel:

  • Schedules that cover a complete year – to be introduced in the autumn of 2018
  • More student kitchens
  • More study places
  • Projectors in all lecture theatres
  • Microwaves – a mobile food station
  • Increased resources for Student Health – more courses and a wider range
