Clarification of exam-related concepts
The activation of distance mode this spring has made it clear that it is necessary to introduce a new concept for a “written examination in an examination hall taken in distance mode”. The LiU management has therefore decided to introduce the concept of a “distance exam”.
One of the first measures that followed the decision by Linköping University to activate distance mode this spring was to draw up guidelines for written examinations in an examination hall that were reconfigured as examinations to be taken remotely. At the same time, the faculties decided that written examinations in an examination hall should be replaced by written exercises carried out at home (in Swedish: “hemtentamen”). The phrase “written exercises carried out at home”, however, is an established form of exam that has not been subject to detailed guidelines. Furthermore, several forms of such written exercises carried out at home are in use at LiU. The concept of ”written exercises carried out at home” together with the guidelines that had been drawn up led to some uncertainty, and the question arose of how to describe an exam that in ordinary circumstances would have been conducted as an examination in an examination hall, but that now during the corona pandemic is taken remotely. It was preferable that the concept had not previously been used in the Ladok student registry administrative system, in order to avoid confusion between various forms of exam.
The solution is to introduce the concept of distance exam to describe written examinations in an examination hall and examinations taken in the WISEflow system that are carried out remotely as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This enables the concept of written exercises carried out at home to continue to be used as it was before distance mode was activated. Such an exam often lasts throughout a complete course or over several days.
The new guidelines and procedures for written examinations in an examination hall that have been reconfigured as examinations to be taken remotely come into force on 10 August and will be valid up to and including 31 January 2021. The guidelines are to be used for exams that are held in the period 1 September 2020-31 January 2021. The previous guidelines that were adopted on 12 May apply to all exams held up to and including 31 August 2020.
