Students at LiU have access to several services, both specialised services that are used in certain courses, and other Microsoft services, online and installed locally. Are you clued in on everything you can do with them?
This webpage provides a summary of services that you can use freely on a LiU-based licence, including Matlab, Nvivo, Minitab and Stava Rex. You can use Lisam to reach Microsoft’s online services (Office 365), and you can install Office apps on your own devices and use them free of charge while you are a student. These include Word, Excel and Power Point.
- Download and install the apps locally on your computer - see instruction below the image!
Several other useful services are described below.
Collaboration and planning
OneNote – organise notes from meetings and lectures in digital form.
A planning system that can help to structure group work, writing a thesis, or your own to-do lists.
Teams enables you to create a group that shares files and can hold conversations through various channels. By creating a group in Teams you can also create a task board in Planner and assign tasks to group members.
You and others at LiU who are to be members of a team do not need to create separate login details: just use your LiU ID. Both Planner and Teams are also available as mobile apps.
Questionnaires and registration forms
It is easy to create a questionnaire in Microsoft Forms, and easy for respondents to fill in. The questionnaire works well when respondents answer on a mobile device, and you get a summary presented in a clear overview. It is possible to put branch points into the questionnaire such that respondents can skip questions that they do not have to answer. It is also possible to share the questionnaire and its answers with others at LiU.
Again, you log in using your LiU account, where everything is saved and can be shared with others who have a LiU ID.
The Survey and Report tool in MinIT is available if you need to create more advanced questionnaires.
Storing and sharing files
You can use OneDrive while you are a student for saving files. Keeping your files in a cloud-based service means that you can collaborate on the same document without needing to create different versions of the document in, for example, Word and Excel. This is possible by giving access to others who have a LiU ID.
Other useful services
Outlook – access to your LiU email
To-Do – make easy-to-use to-do lists for keeping things under control
Sway – create interactive presentations
Minecraft education edition – a variant of Minecraft that can be used in teaching.
Reading text aloud
Several of Microsofts apps (for example Word, OneNote and Teams) has built in functionality to read text aloud, Immersive Reading. The interfaces differs a bit, but choose any of these way to start it:
Alternative 1: in the menu; click View and Learning Tools. Changing alternatives for column width, page colour and text spacing are also available in this menu.
