Erasmus Placement

The Erasmus+ programme, which is financed by the European Commission, makes it possible for you to apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship for practical training (Erasmus placement) and thesis, ex-jobs for a minimum of 60 days up to 360 days.

You can go abroad more than once as an Erasmus student during your studies. You can get scholarships for studies and/or traineeship for a maximum amount of twelve months per study level, that is to say, twelve months each on bachelor, master, and doctorate level. You could for example get scholarships for four months of traineeship or ex-job and six months of exchange studies during your master's and still have the possibility to study abroad with a scholarship for a whole year during your Ph.D. level.

Eligible countries, subject areas and placements

The approved countries are Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Macedonia, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Croatia, and Turkey. The islands and territories outside Europe (for ex Canary Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Reunion, Azores, and Madeira) and other territories associated with the EU can be approved.

The placement scholarship is not affiliated to a specific subject area; therefore all students who meet the criteria are entitled to apply for a scholarship. You need to arrange your placement yourself in any of the countries listed above. The database erasmusintern.org is one of the places where you can search for placements.

It is possible to do your work placement at a higher education institution but it has to be clear that you are there for placement and not for studies. If you are going to be registered for courses at the higher education institution abroad you are not eligible for an Erasmus work placement scholarship but please note that you might be eligible for an Erasmus study scholarship instead.

If you are studying at Linköping University on a Swedish Institute scholarship, please note that the SI scholarship is only valid for studies in Sweden. Shorter study/research visits to, or internships in, other countries may be approved, provided that they form an integral part of the studies performed in Sweden. However, any placement abroad must be motivated by the student and supported by the supervisor before approval from the Swedish Institute can be obtained.

Non-eligible placements

There are a few exceptions in terms of placement. Please note that it is not possible to apply for a placement scholarship if you do your traineeship/internship at any of the following places.

  • European Union institutions and other EU bodies
  • Organizations managing EU programmes, for example, national agencies that distribute Erasmus+ funding to universities
  • Universities that are funded mainly by EU funding, e.g. the European University Institute (Italy) and College of Europe (Belgium and Poland).

Application requirements

Application deadlines: The 1st of every month except for July and August.

Please note that applications received after your placement has started will not be considered. Applicants for Erasmus placement must meet the following requirements:

  • You have to be registered for courses at Linköping University when you apply
  • Your practical training should be a full-time placement with an eligible company or organization and last from 2-12 months.
  • Your practical training must be recognized by Linköping University (read more below under Application).
  • Your practical training should take place in one of the approved countries.

Assessment of the Applications

If limited funding makes it necessary to choose between applicants, the selection will be made based on the following criteria:

  • Students who are planning their first practical placement abroad with scholarship support have priority over former Erasmus Placements grantees.
  • Students who are planning to spend their practical placements in the countries where they received their prior university education will be ranked lower than other students.
  • Students who are planning a placement as a part of their degree have priority over students who are planning to go abroad as recent graduates.

Application

Each application for an Erasmus placement should be supported and academically approved in the form of a signature from an authorized person on the student’s study programme (supervisor or director of your studies). The placement has to be accounted for towards your degree or simply recognized in your degree. If the placement is accounted towards your degree, it is usually as part of an internship semester which gives credit points towards your degree. If the placement is simply recognized in your degree, it means that it will be part of your Diploma Supplement.

Only complete applications will be processed!

Before filling in your application in the portal make sure you have the following information:

  • Knowledge, skills, and competence to be acquired during your placement abroad;
  • Details about your placement: name, telephone number,  e-mail, and postal addresses of the contact person/s at the organization.
  • Invitation letter or email from the receiving organization with start and end dates for the placement (YYMMDD-YYMMDD)

Grant levels may differ between different academic years. Your scholarship amount depends on what country you chose to go to and the length of your stay. 70% will be paid at the start of your placement after you have:

If you do not fulfill all the above requirements you have to repay the full amount of your Scholarship.

...you chose to take the train to the study destination

You will get 50 EUR + max 4 travel days, extra scholarship days (Travel days not guaranteed). You need to upload the train ticket. 

...you study with disabilities

Contact Erasmus+ coordinator well before the start of your Erasmus exchange.

Students who go on Erasmus placements as a part of their education programmes will be covered by insurance issued by Kammarkollegiet during their placement period. Please follow the link to read about the insurance coverage. Information about how to apply for an Insurance Certificate is found under the heading "Free mover- apply for insurance and (if necessary) insurance certificate, see instructions below". 

Diagnostic language tests

The European Commission offers online language tests in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak or Spanish. All Erasmus students must do an online test in their intended work language before the start of their placement periods and a follow-up test after their placements. Please note that there are no performance requirements; the tests are solely diagnostic.

Recent graduates - practical placements after your graduation

If you are close to graduation, but have not yet graduated, you can apply for "recent graduates", an Erasmus scholarship for a practical placement that you are planning to do in another European country during the year after your graduation.  The application deadlines and application procedure are the same as for other Erasmus placements. The major differences between the regular Erasmus placement scholarships are that:

  • you must send in the application for Erasmus placement before you apply for graduation/diploma
  • you must apply for graduation/diploma from LiU before the start of your traineeship
  • you will not be considered as a student during the placement and that means that LiU, unfortunately, cannot help you if you should experience troubles with migration rules/visa regulations.
  • you are no longer covered by the university insurances and thus, you have to arrange insurance of your own and e-mail it to LiU before the start date of your placement (please see below for details).
  • since you are going to graduate before the start of your placement, you will not receive academic credits for the placement period.

Other than that, the scholarship levels, the approved countries, and other terms are the same as those mentioned in the regular Erasmus placement information.

The basic health insurance coverage provided through the European Health Insurance Card is sufficient for recent graduates but complementary private health insurance is recommended. Please note that unless the receiving organization commits to grant you minimum accident insurance (at least for damages caused to the trainee at the workplace) and liability insurance at work (for damages caused by the trainee at the workplace), you also have to get private insurance for accidents and liability. Please e-mail the insurance copy to erasmusstipendium@liu.se
